Tuesday, May 24, Muncie Community Schools’ (MCS) Board of Trustees approved a proposal from Legacy Life Security. Legacy Life Security’s proposal outlines a security plan where a director of security will be employed to oversee eight Student Resource Officers (SROs).
"It's a better option for us than [a] traditional SRO program," Andy Klotz, Chief Communications Officer for Muncie Community Schools said.
The plan states that three SROs will serve in Muncie Central High School, two SROs will serve at Northside Middle School, along with two others at Southside Middle School. One SRO will serve Muncie’s six elementary schools on a rotating schedule.
MCS Chief Financial Officer Brad DeRome said that Legacy Life Security, along with its owner, Pastor Robert Scaife, had been working with the schools a few months prior to the announcement
Scaife, who is a veteran police officer, was called in as a SRO after Muncie Central High School students held a protest in November 2021 due to a class project that created tension between the Muncie Police Department’s SROs and students. After the protest, the school took three E-Learning days.
This plan will be put in place for the 2022-23 MCS academic year, DeRome said.
