MUNCIE, Ind. --- As suicide awareness month nears an end, the organization A Better Way is reminding people that help is available year-round.

After the suicide hotline 9-8-8 was introduced across the nation, A Better Way became a hotline for 56 counties in Indiana. According to their annual report, the organization received over 2,500 calls related to suicide from 2022 to 2023.

A Better Way provides emotional and physical support to those in need. Lenora McRoberts, education and outreach specialist, said that 5,987 of the calls are from frequent callers, asking for support. A Better Way also provides a safe place to stay for those experiencing domestic violence.

A Better Way also works with Ball State by providing a crisis hotline after business hours. The university also provides free counseling to students. It is located at Lucina Hall, Room 320. Counseling hours are available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

“There is somebody out there that loves you, there is somebody out there that wants to stand beside you," McRoberts said, “We all have that one person even if we aren’t clear-headed enough to see it”.
