In the bottom of the first inning of Ball State Baseball's (38-17, 32-7 MAC) first Mid-American Conference (MAC) Championship Tournament game against Ohio (29-22, 21-15 MAC), fifth-year first baseman Trenton Quartermaine hit a RBI single to score fifth-year center fielder Amir Wright, who hit a double off the fence in the Cardinals first at-bat of the game. Even after fifth-year right fielder Nick Powell's out to follow Quartermaine's hit to put Ball State up 1-0, when freshman designated hitter Hunter Dobbins stepped to the plate, Cardinal fans at Ball Diamond at First Merchant's Ballpark Complex in Muncie, Indiana, were still enthusiastic.
In the middle of Dobbins' at-bat, the game was brought to a screeching halt. The home plate umpire called time and announced a 3--minute lightning delay.
Then the rain came. Then another lightning delay.
Around 5:10 p.m., almost an hour after the first lightning delay, Ball State Baseball head coach Rich Maloney and Ohio Baseball head coach Craig Moore met with the home plate umpire and MAC official in what most thought was a discussion to resume the contest. After a hot start for Ball State, it turns out the Cardinals will have to wait, as their game against the Bobcats has been postponed.
MAC officials and Ball State Athletics announced the game will be picked up as it was, which saw Ball State lead 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning with one out, Quartermaine on first and Dobbins up at approximately 10 a.m. May 26, though that time is tentative due to weather. Central Michigan (39-16, 30-7 MAC) defeated Toledo (32-24, 23-16 MAC) 11-10 in May 25's 11 a.m. game, meaning before this postponement, the Chippewas were set to meet the winner of Ball State V. Ohio at 4 p.m. May 26 and the Rockets were set to meet the loser of this contest at 10:30 a.m. May 26.
With this postponement and tentative rescheduling for 10 a.m. May 26, game three (Toledo V. loser of Ball State V. Ohio) is tentaively set for 1:30 p.m. May 26 and game four (Central Michigan V. winner of Ball State V. Ohio) is tentatively set for 5:00 p.m. May 26.
