As a means of encouraging people to visit downtown Muncie more often, this summer will feature movie screenings and activities for different crowds.

With Moonlight Movies, Art Reels and Foodie Fridays organized by Muncie Downtown Development Partnership intends to draw people from the community to visit downtown businesses — restaurants, entertainment and shopping.

“It’s a way for people to come downtown and experience what we have here,” said Cheryl Crowder, events director at Muncie Downtown Development Partnership. “You have to encourage people to come down here.”

Here’s a brief description on the events taking place this summer:

Moonlight Movies:

Moonlight Movies:
Aquaman — June 8
The Little Mermaid — July 13
Jurassic World — Aug. 10
Dumbo — Sept. 14

After Hours Art Reels:
Baby Driver — June 6
Django Unchained — July 11
Reservoir Dogs — Aug. 1
Bohemian Rhapsody — Sept. 5

This event will screen movies starting at 8 p.m. the second Saturday of every month at the Canan Commons.

According to a press release the event is sponsored by Wealth Strategies and produced by Sight and Sound. Crowder said these movies are geared toward families.

Movies will be shown on a digital screen instead of an inflatable screen so that they can get started with the movie screenings before it gets dark outside, Crowder said.

Prior to the movie screening, themed pre-show activities for kids will also be provided starting 6 p.m. like a bounce house and face painting on site, the press release states.

“We try to do kind of do something that the entertainment ties in to the movie,” she said.

Guests are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chairs and bug spray and vendors will be on-

site with light snacks, the press release states. It is a weather permitting event.

After Hours Art Reels:

Following the monthly First Thursday Gallery Walks, held the first Thursday of every month, “Afterhours Art Reels” will take place around after 10 p.m.

The press release states the films will be projected onto the Mutual Bank wall on Charles St. at dusk with seating available on the patio of Fickle Peach bar for guests 21 and above.

Crowder said the event initially started off with screening cult classic movies, and hence were catering to a different crowd.

Foodie Fridays:

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Friday in June and July food trucks, kids activities and live entertainment will be provided at Canan Commons.

According tot heir website, two food truck vendors will also be available each week and will rotate throughout the summer.

“It’s a nice way to just have lunch or hang out in the park, get outside for a little bit,” Crowder said.
