Former Ball State head coach Brady Hoke was named interim head coach at Tennessee on Sunday, replacing Butch Jones, who was fired after Tennessee's 50-17 loss to Missouri on Saturday.
Hoke was a linebacker at Ball State from 1977-80 and coached the team from 2003-08, posting a 34-38 record and making two bowl games.
He also coached the Cardinals during their last appearance in the AP Top 25 in 2008, when the team started 12-0 before losing in the MAC Championship Game to Buffalo.
After the 2008 regular season, Hoke was hired as the head coach at San Diego State; two seasons later he was named Michigan's head coach.
Hoke posted a 31-20 record at Michigan, but was fired after it went 5-7 in 2014. He then served one year as a defensive coordinator at Oregon before becoming the defensive line coach at Tennessee.
The Volunteers are currently 4-6 (0-6 SEC) and must win their remaining two games against Louisiana State and Vanderbilt to become bowl eligible.
